Gynecomastia is pain-free, but still unattractive sickness of defective breasts tissue enlargement. This condition is not quite as uncommon as many may think as it affects about half of all men. Even not so common, Gynecomastia may develop only on one breast. There are many factors that a male could have enlarged breasts, but sadly most of the time the cause is unidentified.

Age of puberty

Even uncommon, age of puberty is one of the minor causes that can trigger Gynecomastia development in the early teenage years. The imbalances in the hormones cause excessive breast tissue to develop in over half of the males that go through puberty.

Drugs and Pills

Gynecomastia can be also caused by some pills doctors prescribe you for some of the following disorders: leukemia, hemophilia, leprosy, Klinefelter's syndrome and few others. In these cases it is almost impossible to treat it as you can't just avoid to take the pills. However you can stay away from illegal drugs. But still there is some chance that Gynecomastia is behind poor eating habits and unhealthy weight. Some studies are now being made about this possible cause.

Human body changes

Even though it is not proven, the aging process can have a huge impact on moobs and actually trigger it, especially in later years. Also there is plenty of drugs that list moobs as an unwanted side-effect. Therefore, you should always read the booklet attached to the pills you take. Primary and secondary Hypogonadism could be a cause as well.
Primary Hypogonadism can include mumps, trauma and infection. Secondary Hypogonadism consists of to much disorders to list them. Talk about them with your doctor if you need it.

Gynecomastia can also be a result of by tumors, systemic, including Adrenal, renal failure, or Thyrotoxicosis.

Hormone Imbalances

Much research has been done on Gynecomastia and many think that in a good majority of the cases the real cause is an altered androgen/estrogen ratio that changes the elements in the breast tissue. The overproduction or the totally opposite, lower production of androgen and estrogen can be a reason for moobs development.

Congenital Disorder

Still there is plenty of other medical disorders that can trigger it. Pure alcoholism or herpes infection could cause it as well. To list few others: HIV, chest wall trauma, cystic fibrosis, spinal cord injury and so on. Being overweight is not helping as well. Not much ofther, but Idiopathic could be cause as well. There is so much research taking place lately that the real cause should be discovered shortly. Afterwords, it will probably make all current treatment options deprecated and new ones will hit the market.
